I love this work, the people I get to work with and the outcomes that I see. I get to help people from all walks of life who are doing good work in the world. I help young professionals understand how to balance their long-term goals with their day-to-day choices as they begin to tackle the big financial questions. I help couples confirm that their diligence has paid off and they’re ready to retire. I help others to explore the ramifications of major decisions like a career change or a return to school.
Early in my previous life as a river guide, I advocated for hydropower reform on California’s Kern River, specifically for returning flows to the river. Our position focused on river health and the economic benefit to the community of a healthy flowing river. This project sparked an interest in sustainable economics and business and lead me to pursue an education in sustainable community development and business.
After completing my Masters studies, I was pulled into financial planning by friends and colleagues seeking financial planning and investment advice.  One friend specifically said, “I want to start saving for tomorrow. I think I want to open an IRA, whatever that is, and I want to invest in good companies. How do I do that? ”  I was immediately intrigued with the idea of integrating sustainable business and personal finance and with that, New Outlook Financial was born.
As a river guide, I was responsible for leading my clients through wild and unfamiliar territory, managing the associated risks, and clearly communicating the information they needed to know to safely enjoy the experience and the place. In many ways I am still doing this, only in a different environment.  Instead of analyzing river flows and weather, I’m analyzing cash flows. retirement projections and the economic climate.
When I am not helping clients navigate the wilderness of personal finance and investing, I’m running to keep up with my young son and daughter, helping my wife in the garden and planning our next big outdoor adventure.
